How can schools nurture individual brilliance by leveraging the power of the group? Collective Genius offers a compelling, research-informed answer. Drawing on inspiring global examples from science, the arts, psychology, and neuroscience-from Degas and the Beatles to cutting-edge education theory-Sean Slade challenges the myth of the lone genius to show how breakthrough innovation, creativity, and high-level learning emerge through shared inquiry, culture, and the "adjacent possible." Instead of treating brilliance as a rare individual trait, this book reveals how educators and school leaders can design collaborative learning environments where every student's unique potential thrives. Organized into three parts-understanding collective genius in the world, examining its role in education, and applying it in practice-Slade, drawing on thirty years of experience and consulting work with several international organizations, including UNESCO, moves seamlessly from high-level thought leadership to actionable school design. As artificial intelligence automates routine problem-solving and information access, Collective Genius provides a timely vision for K-12 education, focusing on uniquely human capacities: higher-order thinking, creativity, and collective problem-solving. Educators will discover practical ways to balance collaboration with healthy competition, restructure traditional classrooms, and build vibrant learning cultures where brilliance is a collective endeavor. Key insights include: Why innovation and creativity are rooted in collaboration, not isolation. How the "adjacent possible" expands learning through shared ideas and experiences. Ways to balance collaboration and competition to maximize student growth. Strategies for designing environments that cultivate creativity and collective intelligence. How AI and changing contexts make collective approaches to learning more essential.
