Mr Green Grows a Garden

In the middle of the big city, there was a tired, ugly place that made Mr. Green feel very sad. . . . So begins this uplifting and charming story of the magic that can happen when young people, older people and plants come together.

Mo has lost his father. But as he helps his neighbour Mr Green create a beautiful garden in an abandoned, forlorn space in the city, a smiley feeling grows inside Mo and he learns that a garden can be a very good place to remember people we’ve lost. As the two friends grow their garden, readers will also discover how being in nature is good for our mental health; how intergenerational friendships are important; the importance of rebuilding ecosystems and making places for wildlife; how plants grow, including vegetables; the importance of planting trees; and how soil is a living thing that needs to be nurtured.

“Brilliant and engaging illustrations and a lovely storyline that gently addresses loss in a sensitive and uplifting way.” Emily Mallion, East Sussex.

I absolutely adored Mr Green Grows a Garden. . . . .Bringing mental health and friendship together in one book with an adorable story is what everyone needs. The illustration style of this is amazing. It brings drawings into actual photographs and creates a really unique dynamic for the book!

For anyone with young children, this book is absolutely delightful. Beautifully and sensitively written, and so much more than a children’s gardening book, it covers many more issues within its pages.
Brigit Strawbridge, Author & Conservationist

If you’re looking for a fantastic book on gardening and the science of growing plants for young children then this is it. Mr Green Grows a Garden has everything you need in the book to introduce gardening to young children and of course there’s the brilliant story.

The story follows Mr Green who decides one day to make a garden out of a dull and gloomy looking place and Mo who chooses to start helping his neighbour which creates the start of not only a beautiful garden but a beautiful friendship. The story is lovely and whilst some books full of facts we’ve read in the past have been lacking in depth to the story this one is certainly not.

This is a beautiful book that is great for learning about gardening and a garden’s place in the community. The characters are so loveable and the information gained from reading this book alongside the heart-warming story make this the perfect book for gardening fans and children up to primary school age. Definitely worth a read!
