A structured reading program for children aged 3-7 learning to read English.
Divided into five phases, it systematically introduces letters and sounds, starting with wordless Phase 1 books that build prereading skills.
Phase 2 begins with basic letters (e.g., s,a,t,p,i,n) and progresses through increasingly complex sounds and rules, culminating in Phase 5 with texts of 500+ words.
Even though they’re using the structured phonics system, the books still manage to be genuinely rewarding reads that foster a love of reading.
These texts are written to develop other important things, being able to read smoothly (“fluency”), being able to read with expression (“prosody”) and being able to read for a long
period of time (“reading stamina”).
Reading Stars Phonics Phase 2 set contains a complete set of reading books to support the first stage of a phonics programme where children are actually able to start reading. There are 43 titles in the Reading Stars Phase 2 Set.
Both fiction and non-fiction titles, on a range of topics and text types are included in this set. These books correspond to Phase 2 of the Letters and Sounds programme, and match any phonics programme that follows the Letters and Sounds order to introduce new phonemes and graphemes. The words are all decodable which means they are made up of phonics that children can put together to decode the word.
There are two stages of books:
- The first stage is 27 ‘build’ titles that gradually cover the sets of GPCs and CEWs met in this phase. These books do not cover anything that the child will not have met before.
- The second stage is 16 ‘practice’ titles that draw on everything met in Phase 2. Some of these titles focus on specific GPScs and CEWs by including lots of occurrences of them – they are ideal for providing targeted reading practice for children who are still not secure with certain letters and sounds.
Together this pack of books offers a structured way of developing children’s progression in reading.
