Translated by Wurundjeri Woi wurrung Elder, Aunty Gail Smith, 5 Wayibu Dulum: 5 Little Ducks is a part of a series of classic children’s books that translates well-loved nursery rhymes into the ancient Woi wurrung language of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people―a group indigenous to what is also known as the Yarra River Valley region. 5 Little Ducks is a traditional Western nursery rhyme that follows a mother duck and her ducklings as they travel every day “over the hill and far away”, but for every time her ducklings wander over the hills one less duckling seems to come back. At the end of the rhyme, all ducklings are reunited with their mother.
